Yule is a solar ritual.
Yule ritual on 21 December
(Winter Solstice).
To celebrate your Yule ritual at home,
you can use the Yule candle from
Magic of Brighid
together with the
Magic of Brigid Yule Oil.
…
Yule Ritual Key Points:
· Jul means wheel, the wheel of life –
· Wheel of the course of the seasons –
· Overcoming death in nature –
· Awakening life that is not yet visible –
· Pregnancy, resurrection, rebirth –
· Shortest day and longest night –
· Beginning of the new cycle in the cycle of life –
· Returning sun, the end of the descent –
· Birth of the new light –
· Aspect of life in death –
24 December, Mother Night.
Smoking Nights always went from night to night.
· Beginning of the 12 Smoking Nights, 25 December to 5 January –
Our ancestors believed that in the nights
“between the years”
spirits walked about,
dead souls returned
and demons roamed.
….
Mistletoe Sprig:
On the sixth day
after the December new moon
one cuts the mistletoe,
or better still,
breaks it
with the left hand.
Then one decorates it
with red and gold ribbons
and hangs it above the door.
The mistletoe was revered as a plant
that wards off demons
and misfortune.
Mistletoe growing on old oaks
was especially sacred.
For the Druids
there were fixed rules
as to how the mistletoe
was to be cut,
with golden knives,
and in certain moon phases.
The mistletoe sprig
is the sacred plant of Frigga,
the goddess of love.
Kissing under a hanging
mistletoe sprig promises
that couples
will stay together for a lifetime.
This custom
is attested from 1 December
to 6 January.
If a young woman
stands under a mistletoe sprig
attractively decorated with ribbons,
she may not refuse
a kiss.
Mistletoe
is credited with mysterious powers.
The plant is said to bring health,
fertility, courage
and good fortune.
The Germanic peoples were of the opinion
that it protected people.
Bracelets were worn
or mistletoe sprigs
were placed above doors for protection
against witches or spirits,
fire
or lightning.
Finally, the mistletoe sprig
was burned on the twelfth night,
on 6 January.

The Smoke Nights / Smoking Nights
Actually, it ought to be called Smoke Nights,
because the origin comes from fumigation,
which people already practised in the nights from Christmas to Epiphany
in pre-Christian times.
At that time, however, the first Smoking Night
was at midwinter, the Winter Solstice.
Today the Smoking Nights begin on 25 December
and end in the night of 5 to 6 January.
They are the nights of returning souls
and evil spirits,
a transitional time from chaos to order.
The term
“between the years”
is an expression still in use today.
The old has not yet gone
and the new is not quite here.
In fact, this is an “empty time”
if one starts from the lunar year,
which has exactly these 12 days fewer
than the solar year.
To drive out evil spirits, people fumigated the house,
the yard and the stables,
so that humans and animals might be preserved from misfortune
and illness.
The Smoking Nights are especially suitable,
for this reason also called lot days,
for every kind of oracle for the coming year.
Lead pouring on New Year’s Eve
is still a small remnant from olden times.
A significant time,
which grants the attentive observer
many a glimpse
behind the veil.

Mistletoe
It was a sacred plant among the Celts and Germanic peoples
and is regarded as the key to the Otherworld.
As a result, it is especially suitable for dream fumigations,
for fumigations during the Rauhnächte
and for rites of passage.
Mistletoe drives away negative vibrations,
protects against illness and misfortune,
and has a calming effect on the nervous system.
Mistletoe is a component of many Celtic-Nordic incense mixtures.

Tip for the Smoke Nights:
Fumigate to drive out evil,
and during the 12 oracle nights place milk with honey,
for the Wild Hunt and for the house spirits,
in the attic.
On these days the dark powers have great might.
During the Smoke Nights one should behave quietly
and inconspicuously,
and do no work.
One should also not wear white laundry,
otherwise the Wild Hunt will come for you.
During the 12 nights
the new witch’s brooms are bound
(Twelfth Brooms),
with which one can protect oneself from evil magic
by standing the broom with the brushwood
upwards in the corner.
These two weeks are a transitional time,
a no-man’s-land, between the years.
In these nights
the Wild Hunt sweeps through the air,
led by Woden and Frau Holle.
The Smoking Nights were used
to predict the future.
For this, during these Smoking Nights,
at midnight,
one went silently to a crossroads
and listened (divined) for signs
that could be interpreted both for the weather
and for events.
Dreams during the Smoke Nights
are said to reveal a glimpse into the future.
One night stands for each month.

Julfest, Yule Ritual
At the Winter Solstice in olden times
the priestesses climbed the snow-covered hills
to light great Yule fires at sunrise,
which were visible far and wide.
Afterwards they proclaimed
the birth of the light,
the returning sun.
The men walked through the village with torches
and the women decorated the rooms
with evergreen branches,
lit a light and burned incense
and fragrant woods.
Later, not only branches,
but whole fir trees were brought into the parlour
and traditionally decorated with apples, fir cones
and straw stars.
This pagan custom
has survived into our time.
Today the apples
are replaced by glass baubles
and there are no limits to the imagination
when decorating the tree.
The fir tree symbolises the presence
of the forces of nature despite the winter
and gives us the hope
that the full splendour of nature will return.
🔥🎄🎄🎄🥳🧙♀️
Mistletoe, too, as an evergreen plant,
stands in direct connection with the Yule festival.
The cutting of the mistletoe was a sacred act
that was performed only by the Druids.
This happened with a golden sickle.
The cut mistletoe had to be caught in a white cloth,
so that it did not touch the ground,
because otherwise it would lose its healing powers.
Mistletoe growing on oaks
and on apple trees has the strongest powers,
whereby the mistletoe of the oak develops more masculine energies
and that of the apple tree more feminine energies.
A custom originating in England
is also becoming increasingly popular here:
kissing under the mistletoe sprig,
which is hung above the door.
The man who kissed a girl
under the mistletoe sprig
became her bridegroom.
It is generally said of mistletoe
that it protects the house from negative
influences, attracts love
and preserves from illness.
Also from England comes the custom
of passing around a cup containing alcohol
and each person speaking a blessing wish
over the trees.
From this cup a libation was also poured
onto the roots of a tree,
so that the nature spirits might look favourably upon one
and the harvest in the coming year might be good.
For the same purpose, the ashes of the Yule log, or of the Yule fire,
were scattered over the fields.

Preparation for all nights:
Get 12 dyed-through candles from a dealer
of Anderswelt-Import.eu
(ideally in a colour that suits you:
white, gold, red or green).
Place these on a tray or a fireproof base.
Each night you light one more candle
and devote yourself to the theme of the day.
Keep a notebook (your Rauhnächte diary)
and a pen ready.
Traditionally one fumigates a great deal during this time
(e.g. with Rauhnacht and Yule incense, sage, spruce resin
or mugwort), in order to say farewell to the old year
and welcome the new one.
…
25.12. – Capricorn (January)
Light a dark green or black candle.
Fumigate with cedarwood or frankincense.
Sit in silence, look back on the past year
and formulate a clear, achievable goal
for January.
Write it on a slip of paper and place it under the candle.
26.12. – Aquarius (February)
Use a blue or turquoise candle.
Light it and think about an unconventional idea
or a dream that you would like
to realise in the new year.
Write down three completely new thoughts or plans.
Fumigate with lavender or eucalyptus.
27.12. – Pisces (March)
Take a bath or consciously wash your face with water. Light a violet or sea-green candle.
Place a dream diary next to your bed
and, before sleeping, write down a question
to your subconscious.
Fumigate with jasmine or myrrh.
28.12. – Aries (April)
Set up a red candle.
Before the ritual, do something active,
e.g. a short walk or some vigorous movements. Then sit down and write down one thing
that you want to tackle courageously in April.
Fumigate with ginger or rosemary.
29.12. – Taurus (May)
Prepare something sensual for yourself:
a good meal, a cup of tea, a hand massage.
Light a green or pink candle.
Speak inwardly or aloud five things
for which you are grateful – especially for your body
and your senses. Fumigate with patchouli or rose.
30.12. – Gemini (June)
Light a yellow candle.
Take pen and paper and write a letter to a person with whom you would like to have more contact again in June –
even if you do not send it.
Then read a short passage from a book
or article that interests you.
Fumigate with lemon balm or mint.
31.12. – Cancer (July)
Light a white or silver candle.
Take out a photo of your family
or a loved one.
Hold it in your hands and inwardly send love and peace
to your ancestors and your home.
Allow yourself to permit rising feelings.
Fumigate with lime blossom or camomile.
01.01. – Leo (August)
Light a golden or orange candle.
Play your favourite music and dance or sing along –
entirely for yourself.
Afterwards write a compliment to yourself
and read it aloud.
Fumigate with cinnamon or orange.
02.01. – Virgo (September)
Light a brown or green candle.
Tidy up a small corner of your room
or desk.
Think of a concrete everyday improvement
for your health
(e.g. drink more water, go to bed earlier)
and note it down.
Fumigate with sage or thyme.
03.01. – Libra (October)
Light a pink or pastel-coloured candle.
Create a small altar
or a beautiful corner with an aesthetic object.
Think of a relationship that needs more harmony
and mentally send it balance and peace.
Fumigate with lavender or violet.
04.01. – Scorpio (November)
Light a black or dark red candle.
Write on a slip of paper something that you want to let go of –
a fear, an old habit, a hurt.
Burn the slip of paper safely in a fireproof bowl.
Then remain in silence for a few minutes and breathe deeply.
Fumigate with dragon’s blood or wormwood.
05.01. – Sagittarius (December)
Light a violet or dark blue candle.
Think of a place you would like to travel to,
or a subject you would like to learn more about.
Do a little research or forge a rough plan.
Fumigate with frankincense or sandalwood.
The rituals are deliberately kept simple – what matters is
the inner attitude and the stillness in this special night.
Much strength and clarity in the Rauhnächte!

Solitary Wicca Yule Ritual.
Wicca Yule Ritual –
A Guide for the Winter Solstice
This ritual celebrates the rebirth
of the sun/god
from the womb of the goddess.
It is the longest night,
and we keep watch
to greet the new light.
Preparation:
· Altar:
Decorate your altar with symbols of the season:
evergreen branches (fir, spruce, yew), holly, mistletoe,
red and gold candles, a Yule tree (or a small branch),
a cauldron with a white candle in it.
· Tools:
Your usual ritual tools (athame/wand, chalice, pentacle), incense (frankincense, myrrh, cinnamon).
· Place: A quiet, undisturbed room.
· Yourself:
Shower or bathe beforehand, put on comfortable
or ritual clothing. Grounding and centring.
The Course of the Ritual:
1. Cleansing and Creation of the Ritual Space:
· Take your Yule incense
and walk clockwise
(deosil) through your room.
Visualise how the smoke drives away all unrest
and negative energy.
Say:
“With smoke and fire I cleanse this room.
May it be holy and blessed
for the work of this night.”
2. Casting the Circle:
· Begin in the east (or north, depending on tradition)
and walk clockwise with your athame (or the index finger of your power hand) around the boundary of your circle.
Visualise how a blue or white flame
flows from your tool
and forms a protective sphere around you.
Say:
“I cast this circle of power,
a temple between the worlds.
It is a shield against all that is negative
and a vessel for my magic.
So be it!”
3. Invocation of the Elements/Guardians
· Turn in the corresponding direction
and invite the element.
· East (Air):
“Guardian of the East, spirits of air, I call you.
Bring the clarity of thought and the breath
of new beginning into my circle.
Welcome and greetings!”
· South (Fire):
“Guardian of the South, spirits of fire,
I call you.
Bring the warmth of hope
and the spark of passion into my circle.
Welcome and greetings!”
· West (Water):
“Guardian of the West, spirits of water, I call you.
Bring the depth of feeling and the power of cleansing
into my circle.
Welcome and greetings!”
· North (Earth):
“Guardian of the North, spirits of earth, I call you.
Bring the stability of the foundation
and the fertility of the new into my circle.
Welcome and greetings!”
4. Invocation of the Goddess and the God:
· Stand before your altar.
Raise your arms.
· Goddess:
“I call you, great Goddess, Mother of All,
Queen of the Night.
You are the darkness
from which all life is born.
In this longest night,
in which the world lies in silence,
I feel your womb,
which gives birth anew to the light.
Be with me, Dark Mother,
and bless this circle.”
· God:
“I call you, great God, Sun Child,
Bringer of Light.
You are the spark of hope
that is kindled in the darkness.
I keep watch in this night
to greet your return.
Be with me, radiant Child,
and fill this circle
with your power.”
5. The Core Ritual:
The Rebirth of the Sun
· Sit before your altar
and look at the dark,
unlit candle in the witch’s cauldron.
This is the darkness,
the unborn potential.
Meditate for a few minutes
on the darkness.
What is hidden there?
What is ready to die
so that new things can arise?
· Now take the white candle from the witch’s cauldron.
Hold it in both hands
and whisper to it your hopes, wishes
and resolutions for the new year.
Charge it with your vision.
· Light the candle with a match
or a lighter
(ideally do not use the altar candle,
in order to emphasise the moment of birth).
Hold the burning candle high
and say aloud and full of power:
The longest night is here,
but it is also the turning point.
The darkness is at its deepest,
and yet the light returns!
I greet you,
new-born sun!
May your power
grow with each day
and fill my life with warmth,
light and life!”
· Place the burning candle back in the witch’s cauldron
(or in a safe candle holder on the altar).
This symbolises the return of the light into the world.
Say:
“The light is reborn.
Hope lives.
Blessed be this day of the solstice!”
· Spend a moment in silence
in the glow of the new flame.
6. Thanks and Farewell
(in reverse order):
· God:
“Great God, Sun Child, I thank you
for your presence and your new light.
Stay with me
while the days grow longer again.
Go in peace.
Greetings and be blessed!”
· Goddess:
“Great Goddess, Dark Mother,
I thank you for your warmth
and your protection in the night.
Your mysteries are deep
and your love infinite.
Go in peace.
Greetings and be blessed!”
· North:
“Guardian of the North, I thank you for your gifts.
Go in peace.
Greetings and be blessed!”
· West:
“Guardian of the West,
I thank you for your gifts.
Go in peace.
Greetings and be blessed!”
· South:
“Guardian of the South, I thank you for your gifts.
Go in peace.
Greetings and be blessed!”
· East:
“Guardian of the East, I thank you for your gifts.
Go in peace.
Greetings and be blessed!”
7. Opening the Circle:
· Walk widdershins
around the boundary of your circle and visualise
how the energy flows gently back into the earth
and into your heart.
Say:
“The circle is open,
but never broken.
May the peace of the Goddess
and the love of the God
remain in my heart.
So be it!”
8. Grounding and Closing:
· Eat something earthy
(biscuits, bread, nuts)
and drink a sip of juice or wine
to anchor yourself again in the here and now.
· Extinguish the candles safely
(or let the Yule candle
continue burning under supervision
until it goes out by itself).
· Your ritual is ended.
Happy Yule
and a blessed Smoking Nights time!

Ivy Wreath:
Girls brought the men ivy wreaths,
which were hung above the hearth,
in order to bring spring into the house.
At night the girls danced by torchlight
and threw the ivy and straw wreaths into the water.
Behind their backs they had to try
to catch a wreath.
The ivy wreath meant good fortune in love;
there was to be a wedding in the same year.
The straw wreath, by contrast, indicated misfortune.
Ivy leaves were likewise used for divination on St Andrew’s Night.
Two ivy leaves were thrown into a bowl of water,
so that they floated on the surface.
If the leaves had drifted together by the next morning,
then there was to be a wedding that same year.
If they drifted apart,
then one had to wait longer.
The end of the Rauhnächte
is the night of 5 to 6 January
with the Perchten procession.
